Bio
Hello from Frank Smethurst, and I have been in the Flyfishing industry continuously since I was twelve years old.Guide, Rep, Pro, Buyer, Consultant, Author, Director, Host and Producer are all job titles that I continue to hold in the industry.
Of all these jobs, being a guide has long been my favorite.I am a people person and a teacher, and being able to share a life of observance of the rhythms and specifics of the water and fish continues to be my most comfortable place. I specialize in the amazing Trout waters of Southern Colorado and the Telluride region where I live, and I am senior guide at The Telluride Angler.I am also a dedicated Steelhead guide on the many drainages of Southwest Alaska, and I return to fish there each fall with the incredible Alaska Steelhead Company.
A Scott G series handed to me in the eighties by a favorite client and friend literally changed my fishing life.Up til then I favored really fast rods, and suddenly my casts became effortless, accurate and easy.Thank you Mike Crockett.
With the Scott G in hand, I began to false cast less and less, and roll and single hand spey cast more and more.My mends became cleaner and fewer and I felt the more delicate bites through the blank as never before.I began to realize how many fish I had previously been missing…….Switching to this rod and adapting my casting style to the Scott G is still my largest Trout fishing revelation.
These days more than ever there are so many fly rods but I continue to prefer Scott for a few simple reasons.
Scotts have a certain connection to the line, the fish, the wind, and the water that allows me to more fully understand what is going on wherever I fish.Scotts are fast and powerful when it matters, and always tricky and nuanced too. That they are so durable is also of real importance.I am very hard on gear and Scott’s never fail me.
