Fly Fishing is in my blood, it’s my passion. I love every part of it – the hunt, the challenge, the thought process, the fish, and the fact that you are never done learning on the river. In fact, the river taught me a lesson that shaped my life. I learned that I love to guide as much as I love to be the one that fights the fish. That’s when I knew this was my calling, and guiding was more than a job or a career, it was a way of life. Being on the water daily throughout my season allows me the opportunity to see hatches evolve throughout the year, and in turn see how the trout respond from season to season, hatch to hatch. Not to mention, there’s just something special to starting someone on the addiction. That’s what keeps my drive going day-in and day-out on the river, and it will never get old to me.
I started fly fishing and tying bugs as a young kid, spending my time learning how to fool the trout of the South Platte River. I cut my teeth, so to speak, at Deckers and Cheesman Canyon. These sections of the South Platte will always remain my favorite and be what I consider my ‘Home Waters’. I also blame this watershed for my passion of tying and fishing small flies. I spend my off-season coming up with new patterns that are often no bigger than a #20, and most of the time smaller than that. The South Platte River can sometimes be a very tough river to be successful on. It’s a very technical tailwater that gets hammered by fishing pressure, making fly choice, sometimes, the difference between a good and tough day. That challenge is especially why I love guiding Cheesman Canyon, and Deckers too for that matter.
The challenge of guiding the South Platte River is also why I’m a huge fan of Scott Fly Rods. Like I said before, fly choice is important, but it means absolutely nothing if it’s not in front of the fish or sloppily presented. The fish don’t care what your experience level is. That’s why I need my clients to have a rod that will get the job done. Time and time again, Scott has proven to be the answer. From the beginner, to the advanced dry fly enthusiast, to the hardcore nympher, to the average Joe, Scott Fly Rods has risen to the challenge with the Flex, the Radian, and the G-Series. I am honored to be apart of the Scott team, with the deep history in quality rods, my clients will know they are fishing with the best.
