Like the dinosaurs and sharks I gazed upon in books, the seemingly giant salmon and steelhead I watched my father tug to the bank of coastal rivers terrified me as a small child. Yet I couldn't get them out of my mind, especially once I was old enough to try to do the same. At the age of 8 I clung to a cork grip with a wild winter run steelhead cartwheeling at the end of line. What I felt was a sensation that nothing else could duplicate.
My fishing experiences past, present and future could be summed up with:
Swinging tight lines for steel is rad, and a few violent fish early on really established my passion for steelhead. Arguably the best trout river around shaped a decade of my life, providing an embarrassment of riches in 20 inch trout and a playground to explore early digital photography and fly fishing culture. Then along came social media and the masses, and I fled the circus occupation of my beloved waters and headed for the hills, to find fish and places the internet had yet to discover. Perhaps by fate, rooster fish wrote the next chapter of my angling career, accumulating slowly one trip, one year at a time. Presently I've entered the "Screw Trout" stage, discovering immense satisfaction and thrill with warm water species that for so long I overlooked, until now!
